MY EXPERIENCE.
WITH CGM
SENSORS.
AN INTRODUCTION.
Continuous blood glucose monitoring with a CGM sensor
CGM is the abbreviation for CONTINUOUS GLUCOSE MONITORING. This refers to small "wearables", i.e. devices that can be worn on the body for a certain period of time. CGM sensors measure the glucose level at short intervals via the interstitial fluid. This correlates with the blood glucose level and, put simply, with a short time delay, the progression of the blood glucose can not only be recorded momentarily, but also automatically with the help of a smartphone. The sensors can usually remain on the body for around 14 days and then need to be replaced.
Blood sugar over the course of the day
Our body has sophisticated mechanisms to keep blood sugar within a narrow range. With the help of a CGM sensor, it is possible to visualize how the body reacts. The intake of food naturally plays an important role, but over time I have been able to gain some exciting insights for myself, for example:
- There are differences in how someone reacts to different foods
- Stress in any form (mental, physical through sport, cold, heat...) changes the blood sugar level
- The order or combination of foods eaten plays a role
And a few more. I will report on this in more detail shortly.
